Updated Today, Subscribe!

Hello World.

This is just a quick round-up to inform you of a couple of things I’ve implemented on the site recently which I haven’t talked about.

Subscribe Page:

At the top of the page you’ll see a “subscribe” link.  This will take you to a page where you can choose how you would like to receive automatic Patch updates.  You can enter your email address and receive new posts in you inbox, or subscribe to one of the RSS feeds available.

Updated Today:

On days when a new post has been added, a small banner will appear in the top left-hand corner of the page telling you so.  The transparency of the image doesn’t seem to work properly in Internet Explorer, and so you get an ugly grey square, but I don’t care because no one should still be using IE to browse the web.  Other, better, choices include Firefox, which you can get by clicking the button on the sidebar (and also read my post about computer security while you’re at it.  If you still use IE, chances are there will be security issues to clean up).  This issue may be fixed by the guy who wrote the code for this feature, or it might not.  Sorry.  At least in real browsers it looks really cool.

There’s no accounting for taste

Hello World.

In the past I have directed you to my Last.fm profile, my Flickr photos, and various other pages of mine around the web.  I don’t think, however, I have ever pointed you to deviantART.  I plan to do a write up about this amazing website soon, so I won’t go into it here.

I would like to briefly discuss, however, a bizarre thing which has just happened to me on this website.

It’s still better than Pokemon

Hello World.

Humorous Phases of Funny Faces is widely considered to be the world’s first animated film.  It was created by pointing a film camera at a blackboard.  Here it is:

Cabbage Patch Apparel… fo’ real?

Hello World.

Earlier this week I made a joke post about Cabbage Patch branded clothing.  Well, after a suggestion (and a very useful link) from reader TomHB, I have made up some products for real.

Follow the new “store” link from the home page (or from the tab at the top of this page) to access the new Cabbage Patch Store!

Read on for product details.

Recent this, recent that

Hello World.

Just some quick updates to the sidebar.  Firstly, I’ve reintroduced the recent posts list, which is something you will have seen before.

More importantly, however, I’ve also added a recent comments list, which displays the latest 5 or so comments from the various posts to help you keep track of the conversations that are going on.

Ricky’s all upset

Hello World.

It would seem that Ricky Gervais is annoyed the training videos he and Stephen Merchant made for Microsoft have been released to the public.  Apparently the duo were paid “a six figure sum” to produce the videos, and only agreed to do them under the condition they were never released.

From The Times Online:

IT SEEMS that Ricky Gervais may not always see the funny side. Microsoft has started an investigation after two supposedly private training videos made for the software company by the comedian appeared on the internet.

Gervais and Stephen Merchant, his writing partner, agreed to make the films in 2003, said to be for a six-figure sum, on the condition that they were never made public.

In January 2004, when the existence of the videos was revealed, a spokesperson for Gervais, who won multiple Baftas and Golden Globes for The Office, said: “The idea was to show ‘how not to do it’.”

A spokeswoman for Gervais said: “We don’t want people to think that David Brent is coming back.”

The full article can be found here.

The article talks of the videos being removed from YouTube, however at the time of this writing they appear to still be active on Google Video.

500 photos, all in a row…

Hello World.

You may have seen me go on (and on) about the fabulous photo-sharing site Flickr.  Well, one of my favourite things to do when I’m bored is to browse through some of the millions of photos stored on Flickr’s servers.  However, with so many of them, it can be a little awkward (and slow) to wade through them all.  Along comes Flickr Leech.

Flickr Leech is a site which will collect the photos you want to see (by almost any criteria - interestingness, user, set, tag, or text search) and display all of them as a collection of thumbnails.  This makes it very easy to simply browse through them and only click on the ones you actually want to see.

If you’re ever bored, browsing through the interesting photos of the day can be quite entertaining (click Interestingness->date->go).

Just like a black and white rainbow

Hello World.

Mono is a fast-paced shooter style game which seems to defy description. The game’s website sums it up best: Mono is part Asteroids, part Robotron and part Paint Shop Pro.

You control a ship, or weapon, of some sort and must paint the level white (or black, depending on what colour it started as) using the colours which remain after the various floating, shooting, coloured circles are destroyed.

Truly a bizarre game, but very fun.
