I’ve just finished reading what is quite possibly one of the best books I’ve ever read. It’s a graphic novel by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons called Watchmen. This is a shot of part of it’s cover.

If you’ve never read it, I’d highly suggest picking up a copy (and no, it’s not a “comic book”, despite the pictures). It was on TIME Magazine’s “100 best English-language novels” list for 2005, and has earned much critical praise for re-inventing it’s medium.

If the name Alan Moore is familiar, he wrote the original graphic novels of “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen” and “V for Vendetta”, but had nothing to do with the films.

Ooh, look! That ball’s all curvy!

Hello World.

In recent weeks I’ve become addicted to Curveball. It’s actually quite old for a flash game - I’ve seen it everywhere - but it’s truly hard to stop playing.

Click “Start Game” to, uh, start the game.

And yes, I know it’s just fancy-looking Pong. There’s a reason it’s a classic.

Today was boring. Nothing happened. Move along.

I went to UTS orientation day today, and I’m none the wiser as to what will be going on when I start on Tuesday, nor where I’ll need to be.

It was probably the single most boring and completely useless information day I’ve ever attended. I had previously - perhaps naively - assumed that some form of information should be communicated at a self-described “information day”. Instead, I was subjected to several elderly individuals dressed in academic robes delivering terminally long speeches, followed by a rather bizarre and frankly condescending performance by an Aboriginal dance group (”Do you know what this instrument is called? That’s right, a didgeridoo! Let’s say it all together… didgeridoo!”).

I did, however, learn never to trust the “Peer Networkers”. They’re evil, lying, orange-shirted ambassadors of Beelzebub.

Celebrating my Geekdom

Hello World.

The Buffy Season 8 comic is due out in a few weeks, and I honestly don’t think I’ve ever been this excited about anything.  For those who don’t know, Buffy the Vampire Slayer lasted seven seasons as a television show, ending in 2003.  Four years later Joss Whedon, the show’s creator, has decided to write and release an official eighth season to the story, using the medium of comic books.

To celebrate this fact, I created a desktop wallpaper using the cover art from the first issue.

Feel free to download and enjoy, if you’re as big a geek as me.

I’m currently in the market for a new set of eyes. Mine have turned out to be a set of lemons, much to my chagrin (sorry, I just wanted to use “chagrin” in a sentence). Just when I thought they had settled down and begun to work predictably, they turn around and go all broken again.

So, currently, I cannot read or use a computer without my glasses, but cannot walk around or even watch TV with them on. This means spending the whole day taking them off and putting them on again, and constantly wondering which room - or building - I may have left them in. Because lord knows I need another thing to think about, but which I’ll ultimately forget about.

This is the beginning of The Cabbage Patch PhotoProject. It’s a photo of a rubber snake, jointly won at Broadway Intensity while waiting for The Good Shepherd to start the other day.

As for the film itself, well, it was good… ish. The acting was good (even Maaaaatttt Daaaaaammmonnnnn), the story was interesting and it looked great. But it was long. And slow. And at times, it confused the hell out of me. Normally with such a convoluted story as this I’d consider watching it again to try to better follow the twists and turns, but I think this would be too much of a marathon to get through a second time.

More photos - The Project 365 Redux

Hello World.

As you’re probably aware, the Project 365 photo experiment I attempted failed rather quickly.  I just found myself lapsing, and then being unable to catch up.  It also didn’t help that I lost about a week’s worth of photos before I got a chance to upload them.

Nevertheless, it would appear I’m too stubborn for my own good because I’m starting again.  Welcome to The Cabbage Patch PhotoProjectâ„¢!

This one’s going to be done a little differently.  There will be the same basic rules - one photo per day, every day - only I’ll be posting each shot into the main column of the blog, along with all the standard posts.  This will allow you all to keep track of the project, and comment on each shot easily.  Also, I’ll (try to) post each shot on the day it is taken, rather than a bunch at the end of each week (or month, as it ended up being).

The first shot will be posted right after this, so stay reading.  The photo above is not from this project, but actually from the last one, which you can still find here.

You can keep track of the project here, or see the slideshow here.
